Tampa
The Declasse Tampa is a two-door muscle car appearing in Episodes from Liberty City and Grand Theft Auto Online.
The car returns from the 3D Universe of the Grand Theft Auto series, where it appeared as a beater coupe.
Description
[edit | edit source]The Lost and Damned
[edit | edit source]The Tampa only appears in the opening cutscene of The Lost and Damned, parked outside of a Pay 'n' Spray with its hood open. While it is a fully drivable vehicle, there is no legitimate way to obtain it, as it does not appear in traffic or in any missions aside from the cutscene.
The Ballad of Gay Tony
[edit | edit source]The Tampa first appears as an obtainable vehicle in The Ballad of Gay Tony, where it spawns normally. The car itself is unchanged from its appearance in The Lost and Damned.
Grand Theft Auto Online
[edit | edit source]The Tampa was added to Grand Theft Auto Online as part of the Festive Surprise 2015 update. It was made available for purchase on December 23, 2015, two days after the update released. ref?
Influence
[edit | edit source]The Tampa appears to be primarily based on the 1971–1972 Dodge Dart Demon. The roofline is similar to that of the US market 1966-1970 Ford Falcon, while the shoulder line may be derived from the 1969 Ford Mustang. The front fascia closely resembles that of the Australian market 1973-1976 Ford Falcon, while the rear is reminiscent of the 1968 Dodge Charger, though the tail lights, exhausts, and exhaust cutouts seem to be taken from the Chevrolet Corvette (C3).
The Tampa's dual hood stripes are taken from the 1967 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28, the horizontal tailcone stripe is designed after the Super Bee decals seen on various Dodge models including the Dart, and the lower side decals appear to be loosely inspired by the Boss 302 package for the 1969 Ford Mustang.
Etymology
[edit | edit source]The Tampa is presumably named after the city of Tampa, Florida.
Design
[edit | edit source]Episodes From Liberty City
[edit | edit source]The Tampa is a lightly remodeled variant of the Sabre GT, featuring several of the same design cues, similar exterior dimensions, and the same front-biased suspension setup; viewed from above, the two cars' silhouettes are nearly identical. The Tampa also reuses the Sabre GT's interior and default spawn colors.
Compared to the Sabre GT, the Tampa features a more formal roofline with a black vinyl roof, squared-off front and rear fascias with a split grille, and two prominent ram-air scoops on the hood, placed in line with two-tone paint stripes. The two-tone decals continue on the lower sides of the car, with angled stripes on the front fenders, as well as the rear, which features a stripe going across the trunk and rear quarters. Declasse badges can now be seen on the engine's valve covers.
The wheels are reused from the Sabre, consisting of a basic steel design also seen on many industrial vehicles.
Grand Theft Auto Online
[edit | edit source]In Grand Theft Auto Online, the Tampa is mostly identical to its previous appearance, though the twin hood scoops and stripes have been removed; the original hood is now included among the modifications available for the car. The wheels have been replaced, with the new design being derived from the "Revolver" muscle wheels available at mod shops. The primary color now also applies to the interior stitching.
When the car is started in first-person view, the vehicle will emit a ‘boop-like’ sound effect.
Performance
[edit | edit source]Episodes from Liberty City
[edit | edit source]The Tampa's handling data is nearly identical to that of the Sabre GT, with only the acceleration and suspension characteristics being tweaked. The car's acceleration is slightly improved over the Sabre GT, though its considerably high top speed is the same. The soft suspension makes cornering rather unpredictable, as the car can spin out in sharper turns.
According to its decals, the Tampa features a 310cui (5.1L) engine. The model is that of a V8, identical to the Sabre GT and several other vehicles, fitted with a cylindrical air filter. The car has a front engine, rear-wheel-drive layout and a 5-speed transmission. It uses the same turbocharged V8 engine sound as the Sabre GT, albeit slightly quieter.
Grand Theft Auto Online
[edit | edit source]Once again, the Tampa shares much of its handling data with the Sabre Turbo. The main differences are a four-speed transmission, slightly reduced acceleration, a higher drag coefficient, and more wheelspin when accelerating from a stop.
The Tampa is fairly powerful, with decent acceleration and top speed. The handling is relatively stable for a muscle car, helped by the very good suspension. The frame is very heavy and rather durable, but the front and rear fascias have poor crash durability and the car is not particularly resistant to gunfire. The brakes are not very good, meaning the car requires brake discipline to corner properly.
The engine model is identical, but now uses a unique supercharged V8 sound.

Beta Content
[edit | edit source]The Lost and Damned
[edit | edit source]In Grand Theft Auto V, a framed photo of a yellow Tampa can be found on the wall in Beeker's Garage. The photo was taken in Episodes from Liberty City, on Hardtack Avenue between Vitullo Avenue and Sinclair Avenue in Alderney, and depicts an earlier version of the model first seen in The Lost and Damned. Compared to the released version, the Tampa in the photo uses the wheels of the Sabre GT, rather than the Sabre. Furthermore, the front license plate is mirrored on the right side, an oversight that was corrected before release. Despite using different model files, no visual changes appear to have been made to the Tampa between The Lost and Damned and The Ballad of Gay Tony.
The BradyGames Strategy Guide for The Lost and Damned includes the Tampa among the list of vehicles in the game, along with an image of it parked near the Humboldt River, suggesting it may have originally been obtainable at the time the guide was made. In the final game, it cannot be obtained by any legitimate means.
In The Lost and Damned, the handling and audio data for the Tampa are both fully identical to that of the Sabre GT. In The Ballad of Gay Tony, the data has been tweaked slightly, though most values are still shared with the Sabre GT.
Grand Theft Auto V
[edit | edit source]The Tampa was originally intended to appear in Grand Theft Auto V, but was cut from the game prior to release. Its audio data and police scanner voice line remain in the files of the final game, unused. According to the audio data, it would have used the same engine sound as the Dominator, Phoenix, Ruiner, and Vigero.
The car can be seen in the background of a commercial for Bravado, which can be viewed on CNT. It appears to have the same changes that would eventually be seen on the Grand Theft Auto Online model, notably lacking the twin hood vents and stripes.
Trivia
[edit | edit source]- The Tampa is one of two vehicles in Episodes from Liberty City to be a remodeled variant of an existing vehicle from Grand Theft Auto IV; the other is the F620, which is derived from the SuperGT.
- In Episodes from Liberty City, the Tampa lacks any manufacturer badging, though the police scanner will refer to the Tampa as a Bravado model. However, this is contradicted by the car's badge texture, which contains two unused Declasse emblems.
- The unused police scanner audio data for the Tampa left over in Grand Theft Auto V also calls it a Bravado model.
- In Grand Theft Auto Online, the Tampa is explicitly stated to be made by Declasse, and one of the previously unused emblems is now applied to the valve covers.
