The Albany Roosevelt is a classic limousine featured in Grand Theft Auto V and Online as part of The Valentine's Day Massacre Special update.

Description

[edit | edit source]

The Roosevelt is the oldest, officially confirmed vehicle in the HD Universe, and is followed by the Hotknife, Z-Type, and Rat-Truck. It was initially made available in GTA Online as a time-limited vehicle from February 13 to March 3, 2014, and later re-released indefinitely until its removal for purchase after the San Andreas Mercenaries update.

Influence

[edit | edit source]

The Roosevelt is based on the 1928 Cadillac 341A Town Sedan, especially the custom variant owned by the infamous mobster Al Capone. The rear fascia appears to be taken from the slightly newer 1931 Cadillac Series 355A Sedan. Its slightly curved, mesh grille and headlights, with mesh covers, might be based on the Bentley car models from the same period, particularly the 1927 Bentley Speed Six. The front fascia might also be inspired by the Duesenberg Model J, while the hood might come from the 1927 Franklin 11-B Sedan.

Etymology

[edit | edit source]

The vehicle is named after Theodore Roosevelt and Franklin D. Roosevelt, the 26th and 32nd Presidents of the United States respectively. It is one of four cars to be named after a US President, the others being the Jefferson, Washington and Monroe. Franklin Roosevelt, according to a widely believed but disproved legend, made use of the armored limousine confiscated from Al Capone for protection after the attack on Pearl Harbor, before he could have his own armored vehicle. A vehicle named Roosevelt, named after Theodore Roosevelt and manufactured by the Marmon Motor Car Company between 1929 and 1930, also bears a resemblance to the in-game Roosevelt.

Other

[edit | edit source]

One of the car's default traffic colors, a dark green primary and black secondary, is a reference to Al Capone's personal car, which was also painted green to match Chicago police cars of the period.

Design

[edit | edit source]

The Roosevelt is depicted as a classic 1920s sedan, where the front end has visible frames that are part of the chassis, holding dual chrome bumper bars spanning the car's width. There are four drum headlights closely installed together in front of the grille, with the upper ones having metal mesh covers and the lower ones being smaller and function as high-beam lights. The grille has a chrome finish around and bears the Albany logo on the front, while the hood area features a chrome strip near the windshield that separates the engine compartment from the rest of the car.

On the sides, the car feature large side arches and stepsides running across the car, along with what seems to be four small containers situated under the doors. The front arches have two spare wheels preserved in black leather cases tied with two small straps. The greenhouse area makes use of two circular fog lights on the A-pillars and a sunshade on top of the windshield, together with a soft leather top over the seats area.

The rear of the car has a black luggage bag/chest located behind a rear rack, which cannot be opened in normal gameplay and is considered an extra component. There are two small red circular tail lights mounted over the rear arches, as well as dual chrome bumper bars spanning the car's width, similar to the front. A license plate can be seen on the passenger side, over the bumper frames.

The interior of the car is unique, well detailed, and appropriate for its era, using a wooden backing with multiple brass dials. The car also employs classically upholstered bench seats in place of independent seats, while the doors have inner pull handles in place of lever handles like most modern cars. Additional wooden details can be also seen around the windows and beside the bench seats. The car mistakenly seems to have a steering wheel that would match a car from the 1950s and 1960s.

The Roosevelt comes in a variety of colors, where the primary one is applied to the chassis frames holding the front bumper, bodywork, window surroundings and wheel rims, while the secondary color is applied on the side arches, stepsides, lower containers, cabin area and rear luggage rack, along with thin stripes passing through the chrome door handles and running towards the rear wall of the car. It uses a unique set of wire rims with a circular center, wrapped in medium-profile tires. Both it, and its Valor variant, have a unique stock horn, which is an old Klaxon.

According to the Newswire description, the vehicle is armored. Contrary to that, however, the Roosevelt has no armor or added resistance to damage.

Performance

[edit | edit source]

The Roosevelt drives smoothly and can go up to relatively high speeds, although acceleration is not as good and it is quite heavy (possibly due to its thick armor). With its archaic suspension, spinning out is very likely at higher speeds, and oversteer may become an issue. Lowering the suspension may help prevent this since it will reduce body roll. It is quite durable and proves capable when off-roading.

Like the Granger (and its law enforcement variants), players can ride on the sides of the vehicle, standing on the running boards. While doing so, they are able to use assault rifles and MGs, which are not normally available for use in any vehicle other than helicopters. However, as like any vehicle of this type, passengers hanging from the outside will fall off from harder collisions, scraping against surfaces or impacts from large heights. The number of passengers may affect the car's acceleration.

The Roosevelt is powered a massive V12 engine with 6 double-barrel downdraft carburetors, coupled to a 4-speed transmission in a RWD layout. Its engine produces a unique noisy sound, being somewhat smoother than diesel engines from cars like the Bodhi.

Grand Theft Auto V

[edit | edit source]
Original release
Enhanced and Expanded and Enhanced Editions
  • Has a chance of spawning in a parking lot in Backlot City. Look right when entering from the south-east corner gate, or south after entering from the center east gate. For a better chance, go into the area of the studio where Franklin steals the JB 700 for Devin Weston first, then go to where one would find the car.
  • Rarely spawns in the garage at the 2848 Milton Road, Vinewood Hills. It will have a random paintjob, wheels, suspension upgrade, and sometimes the trunk at the back is missing.

Oversights

[edit | edit source]
  • The Roosevelt features the newer Albany logo. This is possibly a developer oversight as the Alpha, a much newer Albany vehicle, features the old logo.
  • Upon closer inspection, the vehicle lacks any driving pedals. This is also found on the Z-Type and the Roosevelt Valor.
  • Exhaust fumes are expelled at the left side of the back of the car, even though the entire exhaust system is missing.

Trivia

[edit | edit source]
  • The stock wheels are painted the same color as the car's primary color and have large drum brakes, which look black from the outside. Installing custom wheels will replace them with disc brakes.
  • Its name in the files is btype, suggesting that it was meant to be the HD Universe rendition of Grand Theft Auto 2's B-Type.
