R88
The Ocelot R88 is an open-wheel car appearing in Grand Theft Auto Online as part of the continuation of The Diamond Casino Heist update, released on February 27, 2020, during the Open Wheel Races Week (February 2020) event.
Influence
[edit | edit source]The R88 seems to take inspiration from various Lotus race cars of the 1980s, predominantly the Lotus 98T, while featuring the distinctive nose design of the Lotus 88 and a wing derived from the Lotus 87. The rear fascia, including the engine model, diffuser, exhausts, and the shape of the backplate, are shared with the PR4. In turn, they are taken from the McLaren MP4/4 and McLaren MP4/5, while the engine is a rendition of the Honda RA121E V12.
Liveries
[edit | edit source]Several liveries are available to replicate the design of various Formula One teams from the mid-1980s to early 1990s, including:
- The "Dusche Racing" livery, which draws inspiration from the EuroBrun ER189,
- The "Arrow Racing" livery, inspired by the Arrows A8,
- The "Escalera" livery, which refers to Lotus 99T,
- The "Estancia Tobacco" livery, which takes cues from the Lotus 91,
- The "Pisswasser Racing" livery, likely referencing the Lotus 91,
- The "Jakey's Lager" livery, inspired by the Brabham BT50,
- The "Narc Racing" livery, which bears resemblance to the Renault RE40,
- The "Olympian Motorsports" livery, which is based on the Alfa Romeo 184T,
- The "Air Emu" livery appears to be a rendition of the Williams FW16,
- The "Redwood Racing" livery seems to be derived from the McLaren MP4/2.
Design
[edit | edit source]The R88 features a narrow, low-profile design, where the front has a short, rounded nose with small wings on either side, as well as the control arms for the front wheels and black narrow ducts for the front brakes. The middle section features large intakes beside the nose and large vents with exposed intercoolers on either side, while the center features an open driver compartment with two round wing mirrors beside it and a small roll bar on top, behind the same cabin.
The rear end features a single circular tail light, a diffuser with four blades and two exhaust pipes, as well as the corresponding control arms and brake ducts. The rear wing is mounted on two support frames and is made up of a flat surface at the bottom and a slanted rear surface on the rear portion, along with two short riveted fins with a mostly rectangular shape. The entire underside of the vehicle is carbon plated, separated into narrow panels for the nose/cabin area and a wider panel for the main body and diffuser.
Its interior uses the traditional blue analogue dials reused from cars such as the Sultan and the Kuruma, along with a digital display below and numerous buttons found around the panel and the steering wheel.
The vehicle is prominently painted with the primary colour, with the surfaces of the wings painted in a secondary colour. The R88 uses its own custom "Race" wheels with racing slicks similar to vehicles such as the Drift Tampa and the Hotring Sabre, being a silver variation of the "Retro Star" rims with a larger centercap/bolt, and fitted with "Atomic Logo" tyres.
Performance
[edit | edit source]Vehicle
[edit | edit source]The R88 is largely similar to the PR4, having fair handling and excellent braking. At high speeds, the vehicle will get a slight understeer when attempting tight turns but this is mitigated through simple use of brakes. The downside of using this vehicle, however, is that the driver will be unable to use their weapons at all, risking the player getting attacked and not being able to return fire. It appears to have lower top speed and acceleration compared to the PR4, though remains relatively similar.
Unlike other vehicles, the R88 damage absorption will not result in deformation but instead the body kit falling off, exposing the engine and base frame. This can result in more understeer as the car loses more traction because of the missing parts, especially if the spoiler is gone.
Due to the immense downforce, the R88 can also drive on walls, even ones that are slightly curved outwards, and even ceilings if the player angles the car correctly, especially in the Los Santos Storm Drain, where there are inclines.
The R88 is powered by a V10 engine, with intakes that appear to be double-barrel carburetors/throttle bodies. Its sound is a lower-pitched variation of the engine sound from the Deveste Eight, albeit with a slight change.
As with all Open-Wheel race cars, the R88 has different downforce values in Freemode. Depending on the front and rear wing setups, one is able to provide either lower downforce to increase speed or higher downforce to provide better cornering abilities. These carry over in Open Wheel Races.

Features
[edit | edit source]In addition to its already impressive speed, the R88 also has KERS, allowing the driver to increase their speed even further by activating the boost, in a similar manner to the Lectro and the Vindicator. The boost lasts for four seconds and it takes about six seconds to recharge to its full capacity, but it does not have to be full to activate it. In order for the boost to recharge, the vehicle needs to begin slowing down to let it charge. Stopping the vehicle, accelerating, or reversing will prevent the boost from recharging.

Events
[edit | edit source]- It could be won from the Lucky Wheel in the Casino during the Speed Week event.
Trivia
[edit | edit source]- The R88 does not have a default radio station, as it will remain off until the player opens up the radio wheel.
- Although the vehicle has 11 liveries, two of them appear to be either unused or removed from the list. One is the Dusche Racing livery and the other is the Pisswasser Racing livery.
- Its engine model reuses the "Dinka Racing Division" badges found on the PR4, albeit replacing the original "Dinka" with the corresponding manufacturer's name instead.
- Unlike the PR4, when switching to the Cinematic Camera, there is no cabin view intended to emulate the on-board camera like many real-life Formula One cars.
- This could be an intended feature, as design-wise, there is no suitable place to mount an on-board camera, and the vehicle also takes inspirations from models prior to 1985 (the year where Formula One began adapting their own on-board camera system).
Oversights
[edit | edit source]- When the player drives a damaged R88 into LS Customs, the car will automatically be repaired for free. The player will be charged a small fee to clean the vehicle if it is dirty though.
- This was patched in later updates.
