Maverick

The Maverick is a two and four-bladed helicopter appearing in Grand Theft Auto IV, Episodes from Liberty City, Grand Theft Auto V and Grand Theft Auto Online, and due to appear in Grand Theft Auto VI. The helicopter is manufactured by Western Company in GTA IV and Buckingham in GTA V.

The Maverick returns from the 3D Universe where it also assumed a design based on that of the Bell 206 family of helicopters.

Influence

The Maverick maintains the overall design of the Bell 206L LongRanger, albeit with a significantly shorter nose that seems to be inspired by the Eurocopter AS350 Écureuil.

In Grand Theft Auto IV, it is equipped with a four-bladed main rotor, akin to the Bell 407, while in Grand Theft Auto V it adopts a two-bladed main rotor similar to that of the 206L, along with skids shared with the AS350-based Police Maverick.

Early versions of the Maverick seen in Grand Theft Auto VI promotional material remain unchanged from GTA IV, with the addition of a front nose camera that resembles a simplified version of the Cineflex V14. In later appearances, the Maverick is revealed to have been heavily revised to more closely resemble the Bell 407, while retaining the rotor configuration of the 206.

The redesigned Maverick makes a full appearance in the August 2026 leaks, where it can be seen parked on a helipad next to a medical clinic, as a Medevac helicopter owned by Fast Pass EMS. It is shown to come equipped with composite door windows, and a wire cutter.

Design

Grand Theft Auto IV

The Maverick assumes an improved design and various changes, although it still remains similar to the previous renditions. Its fuselage appears to be much taller, and two small windows are added on the roof area, but the sections between the side doors no longer have extra windows. The skids are slightly shorter in height, and small details such as two vented sections and small exhausts are added to the engine compartment. Unlike previous renditions, the Maverick is depicted with sliding rear doors that are always open, and the rear passengers sit on the borders of the rear bay instead of on the rear seats. In addition to the aforementioned difference in rotor design (a two-blade rotor replaced by a four-blade variety), pre-release material also depicts earlier forms of the Maverick as having shut rear doors, as opposed to slid open doors in the final version.

The interior of the aircraft features a small flight instrument panel/console in the center and two control sticks for the front occupants (again with only the left occupant taking control of the aircraft), along with safety warnings.

The aircraft spawns in a white primary color for part of the fuselage and tail boom, with a variety of possible secondary colors applied on part of the skids. The nose of the aircraft bears "MAVERICK" stencils on each side, while the tail boom bears "DJO.250676" stencils.

Grand Theft Auto V and Online

In GTA V and Online, the model itself is unchanged from GTA IV, but the original skids have been replaced with larger ones complete with steps. The cockpit doors feature small window dividers, while the main and tail rotors have two blades as opposed to four. The Maverick is also fitted with a camera like the Police Maverick (usable by NPCs or players in GTA Online), along with two mounted winches (unusable by the player in Grand Theft Auto V, but usable – to an extent – in Grand Theft Auto Online).

The interior of the aircraft remains identical to its previous rendition, having a small flight instrument panel/console and two control sticks. In the enhanced version, the aircraft uses animated dials to display vital information, such as an altimeter (measured in ft), a compass (adjusted with the in-game compass), an airspeed indicator (measured in knots) and a vertical speed indicator. It also uses an attitude indicator, which denotes the orientation of the aircraft relative to the horizon (which is also adjusted with the in-game indicator on the radar). This set is also used as standard across multiple aircraft.

The original livery design is replaced with a single-paint color design and a permanent livery with silver "MAVERICK" lettering on the engine compartment.

Performance

Grand Theft Auto IV

A major improvement in Grand Theft Auto IV, the Maverick returns as a slightly bigger, more durable, and experimental vehicle. The Maverick is even faster and more maneuverable, largely due to the changes to the general handling of both land and air vehicles to GTA IV.

Durability is acceptable for its purpose, and thanks to its bodywork, can still take numerous beatings before it falls out of the sky.

Stability is rather disappointing. Even despite the four-blade design, the helicopter has limited stability and cornering can be very unresponsive, and landing can be more trouble after slowing down or performing a quick turn or maneuver.

Again, the aircraft is powered by a single turboshaft engine.

Grand Theft Auto V and Online

The Maverick returns to GTA V and GTA Online with a major upgrade in its handling. Its top speed and take-off capabilities are still the same, however it is more rigid and can maneuver with ease, all despite its downgraded two-blade system. It is also much more durable than the previous renditions; albeit with the exception of high-speed impacts resulting in an instant explosion, a property found on all aircraft in the game.

Like previous renditions, it is powered by a single turboshaft engine.

Green variants are used by most pilots in parachuting locations marked around the map, like the one in La Puerta. Tapping the enter button near it will make the character enter the back and go for the parachute jump, but holding the button will make the character hijack the helicopter.

As evidenced by in-game television footage and pre-release artwork depicting Niko Bellic seated on the right – manning the cyclic with his right hand while using the collective with his left – the Maverick appears to have originally been intended to retain a seating configuration and two-bladed rotor similar to its primary real-world counterpart, along with a simpler striped livery and closed rear doors.

There is a very small sticker on the instrument panel of the helicopter that reads "This helicopter might crash. But we don't really care if it does. Refer to flight manual for help".

Grand Theft Auto Online

If the player calls Merryweather to pick the player up, they have the ability to use the winch to rappel off the helicopter if the player puts the GPS waypoint on top of certain high-rise buildings, like the FIB Headquarters or simple apartment buildings, or onto some ground-level areas (mainly beaches).
The Elitás Travel description refers to the Maverick as being built in Canada and as being "too French" for the United States Armed Forces. This is a reference to the fact that the Bell 206L LongRanger, the helicopter on which the Maverick is based, is manufactured at Bell Helicopter's Quebec Plant.
