OK you subversive little renegade, how close to the edge are you prepared to get? Sure, you dyed your hair magenta, and that quote on your T-shirt is pretty darn nihilistic, and your opinions walk that dark and brooding line between too much truth and too much irony. But are you prepared to drive to school two feet from a decomposing corpse to prove your point?

The Romero Hearse, originally known as simply Romero, is a hearse in Grand Theft Auto IV, Grand Theft Auto V, and Grand Theft Auto Online. It is manufactured by Albany in Grand Theft Auto IV and Chariot in Grand Theft Auto V and Online.

The hearse returns from the 3D Universe, where it assumed an older design.

Description

[edit | edit source]

Grand Theft Auto IV

[edit | edit source]

In Grand Theft Auto IV, the car is known as the Romero, and is stated by the police scanner to be manufactured by Albany.

Grand Theft Auto V

[edit | edit source]

In Grand Theft Auto V and Online, the car has been renamed to Romero Hearse, and is instead stated to be manufactured by Chariot. The company is presumably an aftermarket coachbuilder, as the Albany hood ornament is still present.

Influence

[edit | edit source]

As a variant of the Washington, the Romero Hearse is chiefly based on the 2003-2011 Lincoln Town Car. The hearse body appears to be modeled after the Eagle Coach Ultimate, a hearse conversion of the 1997–1999 Cadillac DeVille.

Design

[edit | edit source]

Grand Theft Auto IV

[edit | edit source]

In Grand Theft Auto IV, the Romero is a coachbuilt hearse conversion of the Washington, with the front of the car mostly unchanged. As part of the conversion, the Romero features an extended wheelbase and roof connecting to custom bodywork making up the rear of the car. The window trim and side skirts, which are black on the Washington, have been chromed. The rear seats have been removed in order to make room for a coffin, and as such the rear passenger doors are nonfunctional and permanently attached to the body. At the rear of the hearse, a swing-out tailgate hinged from the left side offers access to the rear compartment, for the loading and unloading of a coffin. A chrome ornamental Christian cross is affixed to the C-pillar on both sides.

The Romero features the same wheels as the Washington, with the addition of whitewall tires. The interior also features the same design, as a derivative of the Schafter's interior, but is a unique dark purple color. White curtains adorn the side and rear windows. Like the Washington, the Romero features a door-ajar chime.

Grand Theft Auto V and Online

[edit | edit source]

In Grand Theft Auto V and Online, the Romero Hearse is mostly unchanged from its previous appearance, though the Christian cross and whitewall tires have been removed and the headlight textures have been updated. In the enhanced version of the game, the interior has been updated to be more detailed, though the seats, dashboard, and front door panels are no longer purple.

The Romero Hearse can spawn either empty or carrying a coffin, which may or may not be adorned with a wreath.

Performance

[edit | edit source]

Grand Theft Auto IV

[edit | edit source]

The Romero retains the adequate handling of the Washington, but has inferior acceleration and top speed due to its increased weight. Suspension is average on the front, but rather low on the rear, which causes certain difficulty on curbs or bumpy terrain when reversing the vehicle.

Like the Washington, the Romero features a V8 engine model, coupled to a five-speed gearbox in a front engine, rear wheel drive layout. The smooth, low-revving engine sound is shared with the Washington, Admiral, Cognoscenti, PMP 600, and Stretch.

Grand Theft Auto V and Online

[edit | edit source]

The Romero Hearse retains the general handling characteristics of its previous appearance, though its top speed has been increased. The smooth, mid-revving V6 engine sound is shared with the Minivan and Primo.

Oversights

[edit | edit source]

Grand Theft Auto IV

[edit | edit source]
  • The grille bezel is improperly textured, causing the left side to be colored red and the base to have a diamond-plated steel texture.

Grand Theft Auto V and Online

[edit | edit source]
  • There is a small gap on the driver side of the rear compartment interior, allowing one to see the exterior. It is best seen with the Rockstar Editor camera. ref?
