Nextcloud 10 released

Nextcloud 10 has been released with new features for system administrators to control and direct the flow of data between users on a Nextcloud server. "Rule based file tagging and responding to these tags as well as other triggers like physical location, user group, file properties and request type enables administrators to specifically deny access to, convert, delete or retain data following business or legal requirements. Monitoring, security, performance and usability improvements complement this release, enabling larger and more efficient Nextcloud installations."

I've always loved Owncloud. I use it at work and at home. For my staff, I provide an encrypted end to end and on the file system account which is backed up and replicated to the DR site (my attic!) They are encouraged to stick things like scans of essential docs, home KeePasses or whatever in it. Basically a Dropbox (int al) they can trust not to leak and they can keep an eye on. In the event of a disaster at home their data is still safe.

The home one works in reverse for backups and replication. My dad a few months back had a nasty case of encryptionitis. Thankfully I had a fairly recent copy of all his data because I had migrated him to his new PC and kept the copy on my laptop, it included a decade of photos. I set him up with an OC account and put all his stuff in it. He had resisted up until then, mainly due to not understanding what it was for and I'm sure one or two here know how much fun doing IT for the family is.

Now we have Nextcloud to look at and I think on balance, I'm going to switch. Time to firewall it off, do a VM snapshot, do the change over, verify and then re-enable access.

Cheers
Jon

PS You do have GFS backups don't you? Even for "just" home stuff.

Glad you like our work and follow us to our new home! It is a bit of a shame we had to go and get a new name but that is what you get for not making sure the company and community are independent of each other. We will fix that for Nextcloud for sure!

How is the Nextcloud foundation coming along?
First, we want the Nextcloud trademarks to be owned by the community, like the ownCloud one should have been. So we will set up a foundation soon which will control the trademark (not have it sub-licensed!) and more in the future.

Kind'a work in progress. We have a pretty solid idea of what we want (discussed it at the hackweek we had early August) and we are talking a bit to universities who have expressed some strong opinions on it in the past. I would like to be able to present something publicly at the conference but I honestly don't have had enough time to spend on it lately. We'll discuss it at the conference, though, that is for sure.

Always loved it. Being able to look after my (and my customer's) data and make it widely and securely available without a third party involved is extremely important to me.

If anyone is going to lose my data - it's me and me alone! Also, any system that can deal with my wife's frenzied mobile (cell/handy) photo taking and make the damn things appear on her laptop reliably is OK by me.

Just noticed this is in Portage:

www-apps/nextcloud
Available versions:
(9.0.53) (~)9.0.53
(10.0.0) (~)10.0.0
{+curl +mysql +postgres +sqlite vhosts}
Homepage: http://nextcloud.com
Description: Personal cloud that runs on your own server

Today is the 28th, the ebuild I have has a datestamp of 27th and your announcement was 26th. It seems Gentoo is on the ball. Engaging emerge, so I can kick the tyres a bit on the new version.

Cheers
Jon

PS. Jos: Read the strapline (that's the bit after "all mine!") on http://blog.jospoortvliet.com/ and consider whether anything needs changing ...
