The Real-Time Linux Collaborative Project [LWN.net]

The Linux Foundation has announced the formation of a collaborative project to support the ongoing development of the realtime kernel patch set. "The RTL Collaborative Project will focus on pushing critical code upstream to be reviewed and eventually merged into the mainline Linux kernel where it will receive ongoing support. This will save the industry millions of dollars in research and development. It will also improve quality of the code through robust upstream kernel test infrastructure, since anything maintained in the mainline kernel is collectively supported by thousands of developers and hundreds of companies around the world." As part of the project, the Foundation has appointed Thomas Gleixner into a Fellow position.

Cool, Thomas really deserves that. The LF does do a lot of good stuff with their money, although they are a bit too cosy with MS.

Having friendly relations with MS is not a bad thing. The days of the old Microsoft are long since gone. They've some of the nicest, hardest working people who care anywhere. Trust me, I used to misquote biblical verse ("Gates of Hell") and rant and rave against the evils of Bill Gates and other nonsense. Then I grew up, and so did Microsoft. We should have healthy respect for one another in a "Trust but verify" sense - you can be "cosy" without giving up your independent deterrent.

I grew up hearing about the big evil IBM (itty bitty monopoly), but they turned around with new management. Microsoft appears to be doing the same (as hard as it is to accept the change sometimes)

In the meantime, Oracle and Apple have become the big bad guys currently. They too can change, but there's no sign of it yet.

I'm happy for Thomas Gleixner: having fought for a long time, possibly to his detriment and to the benefit of others, it's a welcome recognition.

That said, this tidbit: "This will save the industry millions of dollars in research and development" rubs me the wrong way. "The industry" is drowning in money, which it prefers to throw in direction of lobby groups which are downright free software averse.

"The industry" has suceeded, through lobby groups to weaken public R&D and education. Now it's time for good-will and charities to fill the gap? I mean to do the R&D?

Blech.
