Practical security for 2014

That sounds truly awful and that is not what I expect to be the norm. I figure the best effort is spent on making the reference design really work well and licensing it liberally, these small vendors aren't going to invest in writing their own if they can easily pick up one cheaply or for free. They differentiate in their awful UIs and not in the underlying components which actually do the work.
