It's interesting to see independent hosting providers wake up to their own decline and potential demise, although I can easily imagine that many of them would rather cut a lucrative deal with a big name and get out of the business than do the right thing and support open standards and services.
Similarly, a significant threat to the big names of social networking actually comes from the proliferation of mobile devices, but instead of positioning themselves to offer services supporting open communications standards, it's almost a certainty that mobile operators will refuse to invest in such things and instead make themselves a mere pipeline for big name services, with a nice retainer fee making its way back to the operator as thanks for herding the masses.
Why bother doing the right (and potentially more rewarding) thing when the low-risk option keeps the revenue coming in indefinitely?
