The ability to tow other vehicles or objects is a gameplay mechanic present in several games in the Grand Theft Auto series.

Various forms of towing is depicted in the series, including trailer towing, vehicle towing, aircraft heavy lifting and banner towing. Some of these mechanics are readily available to the player, while others are static, noninteractive gameplay features.

2D Universe

The earliest example of towing in the GTA series is the ability to tow trailers, first introduced in Grand Theft Auto 2. The game also featured a tow truck, but the truck does not have the ability to actually tow vehicles.

3D Universe

Towing other vehicles was introduced in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas where the Tow Truck returns once again, albeit with the ability to connect to other vehicles and tow them. The Tow Truck is capable of towing a wide range of vehicles, including standard automobiles, trucks, buses and even helicopters. The Tractor also features this ability, as well as the ability to tow the Farm Trailer.

Banner towing is depicted in Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. The Dodo can be seen hauling a Vice Voice newspaper banner around Vice City. The player cannot tow banners when in control of a Dodo themselves, however.

HD Universe

The Lost and Damned sees the return of the Tow Truck but once again lacks the ability to tow vehicles. Grand Theft Auto IV also lacks the ability to tow trailers, unlike GTA San Andreas.

Grand Theft Auto V refines the ability to tow vehicles with limitations on both the type of vehicle tow trucks are able to tow and the weight of them. The game includes two tow trucks, the standard Tow Truck returning from TLAD, and a larger Tow Truck based on the Yankee chassis. As expected, the larger tow truck is able to tow larger and heavier vehiclesref?vague.

The ability to tow vehicles via aircraft is also added with GTA V; the purpose-built Cargobob helicopter (and any of its variants) has a deployable cargo hook which can connect to most land and sea vehicles, as well as various props such as rocks and portable toilets. The player must hover above the object and lower the hook near the center of it to connect it. Some missions feature larger hooks allowing the player to hook onto vehicles from a greater height. The Paleto Score also depicts the Cargobob cable-carrying a Rhino Tank, an ability not present in normal gameplay. The DH-7 Iron Mule added in Grand Theft Auto Online appears as the second helicopter in the series with a deployable cargo hook.
